Each plate or box is handmade from recycled materials that are environmentally
sustainable and earth friendly. Both the structure and corrugated mosaic pieces are selected from clean, sturdy,
100% post-consumer corrugated materials.
Ordinary boxes are commonly
made from singlewall or doublewall corrugated. Triplewall is a little more unusual.
The next time you're in a grocery store, look for the giant corrugated
bins that hold melons or bags of vegetables. The first one I got
held bags of carrots so I generally refer to them as carrot corrals. Triplewall is really strong but more difficult to cut.
Plates are generally about 8"x8" and 2-3" high. Boxes can be tiny, 3"x3"x3", or much larger. Actual sizes and shapes vary widely as each is handcrafted and no two are exactly alike. I have made square, rectangular, triangular and hexagonal containers. |
The surface mosaic is made from peeled sections of recycled corrugated cartons, generally singlewall material, with thin cross sections of various corrugated materials.
When selecting corrugated material to peel, I look for interesting colors and a variety of textures. I then cut the peeled material into small squares, triangles, rectangles and/or other shapes to fit into the mosaic design as it develops. |
