Recycled Materials, Naturally Beautiful

Fine Art & Fine Craft

A departure from the practical....

In these Galleries you'll find a variety of shapes and sizes: from 4"x4" to 5'-10"x5'-4".
All are one of a kind and handcrafted from recycled materials that are environmentally sustainable and earth friendly.
Most, but not all, of the frames and other accessories are also recycled.

The corrugated mosaic is made from peeled sections of recycled corrugated cartons, generally singlewall material.
When selecting corrugated material to peel, I look under the surface layer of paper for interesting colors and a variety of textures. I then cut the peeled material into small squares, triangles, rectangle and/or other shapes to fit into the mosaic design as it develops.

Shadowbox Gallery

This series was created in response to a number of comments about dust collecting among the many nooks and crannies of the corrugated material. I also like the way the shadowbox protects the corrugations and other things I may add to the mosaic or assemblage inside.

These black shadow box frames work well but when I've used the ones I already have, I plan to build my own shadowbox frames with corrugated material and recycled window glass. Window glass can not be recycled with glass containers at curbside or recycling centers, so it usually ends up in the landfill.

Altered Book Gallery

In 2002, we discovered an exhibition of altered books at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC. This exhibition included the works of dozens of artists and the variety of ways shown to alter books was amazing! My personal favorite was Dinner with Mr. Dewey, an altered book by Molly Van Nice. She transformed ordinary books into a tureen of soup, corn on the cob, a fish skeleton, a slice of cake, an apple with cheese, plus several other food items for a fantastic banquet of books.

In bygone times, books were scarce and revered, but that is no longer the case. In this age of information overload, there is an excess of books out there with obsolete information waiting for a make over!
Many artists use their talents, imagination and skills to alter old books into new books; altered books are works of art.

I was moved to alter my first book after seeing an idea in the book New Directions in Altered Books by Gabe Cyr. I was intrigued by the unorthodox use of a paper shredder! I selected a book with crimson end papers and took the liberty of tipping in more colored pages to the center section to be shredded. After that, I started cutting niches into the books to create a place to make mosaics using corrugated plus marble, glass and other materials.

The Dot & The Line, an altered book with a niche cut into each side of the open book. The left niche contains a mosaic which includes a vintage French coin, (the Dot), heavy copper wire forming two arches indicating the path of te bouncing dot, and the background is made up of small pieces of rough and polished pink marble and tiny pieces of electronic millifiore. On the right side is the Line, running from left to right, made of a stained glass mosaic made of pieces of different shades of blue and mounted on a piece of mirror to reflect light thru the glass. Above and below the line is a corrugated mosaic with triangles and rectangles. Peace by Piece, an altered book with a niche cut into each side of the open book. Each niche holds a corrugated mosaic where a couple of rectangles are filled with tiny (1/8 inch) squares of rough pink marble. The mosaic on the left is made of triangles and rectangles and the mosaic on the right is made of squares and rectangles. Each niche is surrounded by a border made up of small, rectangular pieces of medium blue and turquoise paper. The open book hangs on the wall and the outer pages on the left and right have been folded making a pattern with the points of the folds. Several sheets of red paper (to match the cover and end pages) were added to the fanned out center pages and have all been shredded with a paper shredder. The shredded pages have been cut so the ends echo the pattern of the folded pages. Keyboard Gallery

This series was started after I spilled my cup of tea on my computer keyboard. Of course, I had to replace the keyboard but I was reluctant to send the dead keyboard to the landfill. I took the keyboard apart and sorted the pieces to be recycled in my studio.

The computer key Equal Plus is included in the corrugated mosaic frame, in the middle are 6 twigs, each painted gold and partly wrapped with scrap yarn, one color of the rainbow per twig. The twig rainbow is mounted on a field of black paper.
The shape is of an upside, reversed L. The corrugated mosaic surrounds a small collage which includes the TAB computer key and several rectangular scraps of paper and plastic mesh. The shape is that of an upside down L. The corrugated mosaic frames a small collage which includes the TILDE accent key and a variety of scraps of paper which include maps, blues and greeens.
