Peace by Piece, an altered book with a niche cut into each side of the open book. Each niche holds a corrugated mosaic where a couple of rectangles are filled with tiny (1/8 inch) squares of rough pink marble. The mosaic on the left is made of triangles and rectangles and the mosaic on the right is made of squares and rectangles. Each niche is surrounded by a border made up of small, rectangular pieces of medium blue and turquoise pape forming a geometric frame. With the book open at the middle, threads, yarn and string in shades of blue are at the center line of the book with coins, wire and metal pieces hanging as book markers. Altered Books
Peace by Piece

Original book title:
Talking Peace by Jimmy Carter
Retired from the Coquitlam Public Library

First I cut two blocks out of the pages on each side of the book to create the niches.
Each opening is 3.25"x6.3875" and about .25" deep. These areas were then filled with a geometric mosaic of corrugated pieces and tiny squares of recycled pink marble.
For a splash of color, I also framed the mosaiced area with cut paper to match the cover of the book, where I also added some recycled tissue paper.
Yarn, string and pieces of metal have been added at the centerfold of the book.
This book is designed to sit on a shelf or other flat surface.
