In 2002, we discovered an exhibition of altered books at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC. This exhibition included the works of dozens of artists and the variety of ways shown to alter books was amazing!
My personal favorite was Dinner with Mr. Dewey, an altered book by Molly Van Nice. She transformed ordinary books into a tureen of soup, corn on the cob, a fish skeleton, a slice of cake, an apple with cheese, plus several other food items. The result was a fantastic banquet of books.
A small photo of this piece can be found by following this link: http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/3aa/3aa228.htm

In bygone times, books were scarce and revered, but that is no longer the case. In this age of information overload, there is an excess of books out there with obsolete information waiting for a make over! Plus many people are converting to audio and electronic books.
Many artists use their talents, imagination and skills to alter old books into new books; altered books are works of art.

I was moved to alter my first book after seeing an idea in the book New Directions in Altered Books by Gabe Cyr. I was intrigued by the unorthodox use of a paper shredder! I selected a book with crimson end papers and took the liberty of tipping in more colored pages to the center section to be shredded. After that, I started cutting niches into the books to create a place to make mosaics using corrugated plus marble, glass and other materials.

The mosaic rectangles are framed by pieces of cut paper, blue and turquoise, in a geometric frame. Custom orders are a great way to create a special gift to celebrate the milestones in our lives:
birthdays, graduations, promotions, weddings, anniversaries, a new business, retirement or seasonal holidays.
It is a unique and very powerful expression of your appreciation of the events and people in your life.

If someone loves to cook - I would start with a cookbook with a colorful cover, If someone loves to travel - I could find an old copy of Murder on the Orient Express or Under the Tuscan Sun or Lonely Planet Guide Book. There are novels, atlases, how to books, plays, poetry, art books, history books, math texts, et cetera, Plus there were the books we read when growing up that had an impact: Call of the Wild, Grapes of Wrath, Nancy Drew, To Kill a Mocking Bird, 10,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Anne of Green Gables, and so many more...

The traditional first anniversary gift is paper and recycled paper is a very green, renewable and sustainable gift - for any occasion.

I invite you to visit the ARCHIVE section of Corrugated Art, where you'll find a wide variety of pieces that I've created over the years. There you will find samples of past work and get ideas for custom or personalized pieces that you can have created for a special occasion.
